Blather

Heading back to Rochester today. Planning on Hwy 14 again. Probably pick up some Spotted Cow in VIroqua for my daughter.

Met George and ME for lunch today in Beloit. Back in Madison now for dinner with my sister’s fam.

I’ve completely missed the Coldplay bandwagon.

They are playing Camp Randall tomorrow evening. Hard to find a room anywhere in town. The Terrace at the Union is more packed than usual for a Friday evening. Good thing my sister’s neighbor is letting us stay for a couple of nights.

Off to Madtown today. The scenic route awaits: US 14 through the driftless area of Wisconsin. Just beautiful.

I think I’m moving my main site to a local server. It’s a single page that would reference all the various subdomains. It’d save me a few bucks a month. I need something to do in my “spare time”.

Today I’m puzzling over how to organize my various sites. Do I want to continue to maintain a photo site in addition to using the photo bits here on micro.blog? And then there’s the whole Facebook, Instagram thing which I would love to chuck into the waste bin. Pondering… Changes are likely.

I was briefly considering having a dry week and then I recalled that I was going to be in Madison WI this weekend with time on the Memorial Union Terrace. Maybe next week?

Oh Joy! Time to renew my driver’s license!

Deckset was much easier to use than iA Presenter. The only thing easier in Presenter was that I could move slides by drag and drop. Deckset relies on an external editor for composition so that involves copy/paste.

Making arrangements to travel to southern Wisconsin next weekend. A short drive. Also diagnosing a weird bug in the key server.

Saw “Cabaret” at the Guthrie Theater today. Always darker than expected. I may have detected echoes of “Springtime for Hitler” in it.

Moving from iA Presenter back to Deckset. iA Presenter’s “markdown” flavor is too quirky for me and the editor is barely passable. I can work far more quickly in Deckset and I can pretty much get image placement the way I want.

I decided to do my workout at home today. We have enough weights and bands here to approximate my trainer’s wishes for me. I have my “exploring photography” group this afternoon.

Lots today. Ann and I have been married 48 years. This morning I took my AARP Safe Driving course for the insurance discount. Worked at setting up our new HOA. Dinner out with Ann. No time for photography.

More trainer torture today. Actually this one wasn’t so bad but I was dragging by the end. Probably due to lack of sleep.

Now back to coding for our next release.

I was able to get a presentation that I’m happy with after fiddling around iA Presenter’s quirky markdown-inspired markup. The test will be actually doing the presentation. Next time should be easier.

I somehow got sucked into the Meta web. A photo workshop I attended made use of WhatsApp and Instagram. Maybe just remove them from my phone?

Playing with iA Presenter. So far it seems nice, but it needs better editor bits. Find myself dropping into BBEdit to fix things.

Heading over to eastern WI today for our July 4th pancake breakfast with Ann’s family. Could get interesting.

I found MarsEdit + TextExpander to be super helpful for June photo challenge, but simple posts like this are best done right on the web.

About to head to the gym for my weekly torture session with my trainer. He attempts to slow down my descent into decrepitude.

It’s the last day of June and I have managed to complete the photo challenge for the first time. I’m going to try to follow @miraz’s example and post a little something every day. It’ll be my Day One replacement.

RIP Brian Wilson. Another great one gone.

I can offer no insight into the minds of others. I can only tell you of my own, and even then I cannot be sure.

I think it’s terribly dangerous for an artist to fulfill other people’s expectations — they generally produce their worst work when they do that.

— David Bowie

Software development can be an artistic endeavor. But there are few software projects that are free of users, patrons, clients, or customers.

Thus, with apologies to Mr. Bowie, there are two traps that software developers can fall into: building exclusively for their customers, and building exclusively for themselves.

I might be crazy but I think I’m moving my personal programming projects from Ruby and Python back to Smalltalk in both its Pharo and Squeak derivatives. This could get interesting.

Editorial shenanigans aside, I still subscribe to the digital versions of the Washington Post, New York Times, and Minneapolis Star-Tribune, as well as my local paper, the mostly excellent Rochester Post-Bulletin and will continue to do so.

Doing some cleanup and testing. Please ignore my noise for a bit. Thanks.

RIP Spider John Koerner.
